We have finally reached the World Snooker Championships! On an unrelated note, this is the last part of the Favourite Snooker Shots Series.
It is something a nice snooker series that I decided to do after the success of the Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves Series. It’s quite nice to do, especially with the material I already have from the occasional #snookergifsunday I occasionally throughout the year on some, well, Sundays. Hopefully, I will be a different snooker series of something, but I haven’t quite decided on what yet. Maybe something related to mental health? Maybe a series on going to snooker cities and venues? Do you lot have some ideas – I would love to hear it!
There’s little reason why Mark Williams is on here. Just thought I can promote Mark Williams as World Snooker Champion more the World Snooker. Anyways, here are some final snooker shots – hope you enjoy!
Stephen Lee vs. Mark Williams (2011 China Open)
Forgetting why we don’t see Stephen Lee anymore, let’s focus on what he was actually skilful at as a snooker player. He was a fantastic break-builder and a lot of commentators and players laud over his natural ability. In particular, his smooth ‘Rolls Royce’ cue action, whatever that means.
This is one of the best shots that Stephen Lee has ever done. This is’t even an exhibition shot and yet everything about this shot is exquisite.
The fact that he won that frame as well as the match is quite nice. But this shot is so unorthodox and is positioned beautifully. What a shame we don’t get to see this anymore.
Judd Trump vs. Neil Robertson (2019 Masters)
A lot has been said of Judd Trump that he should have achieved more than he currently has. Even though to date, Judd won 10 ranking events, 4 minor-ranking events and 6 non-ranking events, some thought there should’ve been an extra World Championship or two.
Going back to the 2019 Masters, Judd Trump got through two tough opponents to face Neil Robertson in the semi-finals. It was noted that Judd’s safety game and ability to win scrappy frames improved tenfold. During the match, Trump and Robertson were on the tense stages of the match until Trump played a blinder of a safety-come-snooker below!
Not only was it a fantastic safety shot, but you could argue that it won him the match. Neil conceded a few points trying and failing to escape. Judd ended up winning that frame, winning the match (6-4) and later, winning the Dafabet Masters for the first time. Brilliant!
Gerard Greene vs. Shaun Murphy (2010 World Championship)
There’s no story to this – just a brilliant shot. Commentator rated this shot as a “9/10 if not a 10/10” shot. Yet Gerard Greene got this on his first attempt.
You may be forgiven in thinking that Greene left that red on and went on to lose the frame and match. Well, Shaun Murphy potted the red but ended up potting the white too. Greene won that frame and THEN went on to lose the match!
Ray Reardon vs. Eddie Charlton (1982 World Championship)
A wonderful positional shot from one of the world’s greatest ever.
Says it all, really!
Dennis Taylor vs. Steve Davis (1985 World Championship)
Usually, when I talk about these shots, I blabber on about the occasion, the prestige and how significantly beautiful it is. Then we get to the final black potted by Dennis Taylor to win his first World Championship 18-17 against 4-time and defending champion Steve Davis. When before Taylor was 8-0 down to huge favourite Davis, he shocked the world and 18.5 million viewers but winning the championship on the final black at 12.23 a.m.
Good night!
