FAVOURITE SNOOKER SHOTS: Part 8

Look, there are plenty of snooker shots to show you to keep you entertained, so please take a gander and watch!

Zhao Xintong vs. Judd Trump (2018 English Open)

Another shot which doesn’t have a lot of backstory but it is still a fantastic shot! Not only is it a plant but the balls so far apart it makes the shot even more difficult. Also, it is by one of the hottest prospects at the moment – Zhao Xintong!

That’s it really – that’s all I got!

Anthony McGill vs. Mark Selby (2015 World Championship)

This is a lovely shot from the 2015 World Championship. This was the event where Mark Selby is defending his title. This was a moment where he was going to be the player to finally break the ‘Crucible curse!’ For those who don’t know, the Crucible curse refers to the fact that no first-time snooker world champion has retained his title the following year since the tournament moved to the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield in 1977. He survived a scare against Kurt Maflin and came up against a debutant from Glasgow…

Anthony McGill was regarded as one of the top prospects and certainly one of the most popular players of the tournament. The ‘Smiling Assassin’ had beaten 16th seed Stephen Maguire 10-9 and was coming into the match full of confidence. He spent about a minute deciding whether to play the shot to go round the houses and position himself onto the pink. This is one of the shots of the match, where McGill stole a frame to go 7-5. McGill went on to win 13-9 and put up a tremendous show in the quarters, despite losing the Shaun Murphy 13-8.

Paul Hunter vs. Fergal O’Brien (2001 Masters)

This Masters victory was orgasmic for Paul Hunter. In more ways than one!

Paul Hunter was 6-3 after the first session against Fergal O’Brien in his first Masters final. Then came ‘Plan B.’ A lot of snooker fans know what this is about but for the less snooker-savvy chaps, let me tell you. Basically, he and his girlfriend Lindsey Fell retired to the hotel room to have sex. Just to relieve a bit of tension, if you know what I mean. Of course, Paul felt great after that. When the second session started (of snooker, obviously), he hit four centuries in six frames. This shot above was a fantastic positional shot and get to the green and on the way to not only completing his comeback, but actually winning it!

If he didn’t win that tournament, would he have won the Masters twice more – both from incredible comebacks? Probably not!

Sunny Akani vs. Ronnie O’Sullivan (2017 UK Championship)

Akani Songsermsawad (now Sunny Akani) was a completely unknown snooker player before the 2017 UK Championships. After beating Fergal O’Brien, Michael Holt and whitewashing Barry Hawkins, was written off by a lot of fans when he was tied to play Ronnie O’Sullivan. But for a No. 87 seed, he showed absolutely no nerves at all. His unorthodox style as well as how he uses the rest caught the eye of many people. This particular shot proved that Sunny had no fear of his idol, as well as his attacking prowess.

The momentum changed regularly and Sunny could’ve won the much had luck been on his side. Ronnie ran out a 6-5 winner but they received a standing ovation. Both shook their hands warmly and undertook a lovely interview together too. Definitely one of the matches of that season!

Stephen Hendry vs. Steve Davis (1990 UK Championship)

This is pot from Stephen Hendry’s Top 5 shots from his recent autobiography, which was published last year. Hendry was the man to take pots under huge amounts of pressure and this shot exemplifies that:

Bear in mind he was 0-49 behind Steve Davis and Hendry needed to win the frame to force a decider. Bear also in mind that he needed the blue and pink to force a decider here. You’d need to have huge cojones to take the pot on. After potting the pot, he stole the frame with a 57 break to level at 15-15. Hendry went on to win the final frame to win his second UK Championship title.

Davis remarked that it was that match when Hendry became the dominant force of snooker. It was that match when Davis’s reign as the top dog was over. Well, the rest is history, isn’t it? Hendry became the greatest player in the modern era!
