“If you want guaranteed drama and a definitive outcome, go to the theatre – if you want something that is entirely unpredictable, that can be rubbish one day and inspiring the next, watch sport.”
Colin Murray (2016)
There are many breathtaking moments for snooker players, commentators and fans to treasure for a long time. The above quote is quite poignant as it prompts us all to why we follow sport. I will try and produce a countdown with moments like this that we cherish in snooker.
They could represent instances that stick because they are so unusual and out of place. Others remind us that there are characters in snooker, a sport that gets an ignorant rap for being boring. Yet like many sports, there are incredible moments that leave fans at the edge of their seats, where the tension becomes palpable and the result leaves one side jubilant while the other in agony. Lastly, there are occasions so great because either we witnessed someone making a record or something that is considered the zenith of snooker.
Allow me to explain this countdown.
I will list 30 moments down to the final one. Then I will split this countdown into six smaller countdowns. This is mainly because it will be too exhausting to read it all in one article. I will show some variety if possible, so it doesn’t become extremely World Championship-heavy, for example. I will hyperlink the entry with articles, videos and GIFS for more information.
Here was my announcement if you need more detail.
Naturally, I encourage debate. This is one of the reasons why I developed this countdown in the first place. The most important thing to note is that this is all my opinion. My opinion will most likely be different from yours so hopefully, we can all keep flaming down to a minimum. Any constructive criticisms will be much appreciated!
There will be the first part (No. 30 – No. 26) published tomorrow and the concluding part (No. 5 – No. 1) around about the time of the 2020 World Snooker Championship. Hope you will all enjoy it! 🙂
