Top seed Reanne Evans restored English pride by beating defending champion Ng On Yee 4-1 in front of a packed crowd in Fürth to claim the first crown of the 2017/18 World Women’s Snooker Tour season, as well as her first trophy in Germany.
Both top seeds Evans and Ng took advantage of the bye that took both of them straight to the knockout rounds with open arms as the others sweltered in the heat of the group stages. Both players were rarely troubled in the first two knockout rounds, with Reanne sweeping past German Ramona Kirchner and No. 3 Maria Catalano, while Ng whitewashed both Latvian Inese Lukasevska and fan favourite Diana Stateczny.
However, they both have to come from behind in the semi-finals. Reanne, who breezed past three qualifying rounds in the men’s event before being beaten by young prodigy Zhao Xintong 4-0 in the 1st round, had to fight back from 2-0 against Rebecca Kenna. Despite losing the first frame when Kenna needed a snooker and the second on the final black, Reanne rallied four frames in the row to reach the final. Her opponent also fought frame behind from 3-2 against No. 14 seed So Man Yan and won on the decider.
In the final, Reanne raced ahead by nicking the first two frames, whilst Ng fought back by taking Frame 3 on the pink. What proved to be the crucial moment was in Frame 4, when Reanne was at the “snookers required” stage, but got what she wanted on the pink. She then took that frame as well as the next frame to run out as the Queen of Fürth (sounds like a Game of Thrones character, but anywho).
According to the provisional calendar, the next tourney will be in Leeds, which LITEtask UK Women’s Championship that will take place on 30th September – 1st October 2017. I’m guessing it will take longer than that, but here is the link anyway: http://www.wlbsl.com/single-post/2017/06/05/Provisional-1718-calendar-announced
Later down the line, I will be releasing a series of women’s snooker articles over this current season. Once I figured and structured all of this out, introduction details and updates will be published before the end of this year. Will definitely need help with this!
